Lake Garda

altThe lake Garda is the main Italian lake and one of the most important water reserves in Europe. With its long neck that ends between the rocks of the shores, heritage of the Ice Age, it has always left the different travellers breathless, trying to describe its wonderful colours and reflexes.

Northwards, the lake is wedged between the mountains, while southwards it extends in the Plain, between the hills and the gulfs of Peschiera and Desenzano. Thanks to its mild climate, this lake is the most mediterranean among the alpine lakes. Since the prehistory, it has always been a cradle for the different cultures which have been crossing this area.

Lake Garda, the most popular and largest of the lakes in northern Italy, borders three regions: Trentino to the north, Lombardia to the west and south, and Veneto to the south and east. The low-lying countryside around the southern stretches becomes increasingly dramatic further north, until impressive rocky cliffs, sometimes swathed in pines, hug the shoreline of the northern tip. The numerous sporting facilities, country-style resorts, and splendid scenery of snow-capped mountains help make the lake a favorite summer playground. Hydrofoils, catamarans, and steamers that use the lake offer glimpses of villas and gardens that cannot be seen from the coastal road.

Today, it is a major tourist destination with numerous hotels and resorts along its shore.

Lake Garda (Italian Lago di Garda or Benaco) is the largest lake in Italy. It is located in Northern Italy, about half-way between Venice and Milan.
